Chapter Five
Outside of Laramie at the ranch
The following morning Jason is ready to start work when Nora stops him. âNow Jason you know I donât like to tell you what it do.â
He smiles at her,
âSince when?â
âOh hush. Now if youâd be wanting my opinion, I think you should go to the station and try one more time to convince her to stay.ââ
âIt wonât do any good Nora, sheâs made up her mind.â
âYouâre not going to give up, arenâ you. Why if my Sean gave up when I told him no the first time we never would have married.â
âYou turned Mr. Delancy down the first time he asked you to marry him?â
âI told him no three times before I said yes.â
âBut why? â
âHe really wasnât ready to marry the first three times.â
âAnd that was because?â
âWell, the first time he was only seven, the second time he was fourteen, the third time he was sixteen the last time he was eighteen and was heading to America. I knew he was ready to have a wife then and I figured I held him off long enough.â
Jason smiles and shakes his head
âNora I wish you were just a bit younger.â
Nora blushes
Youâve got some blarney in you, Jason Anderson, trying to turn me head like that. Now you go into town and try to get that pretty lassie back.â
âYou donât give up do you?â
âNoâ
She gently pushes him out the door
He makes it to town and slowly makes his way to the station. How would he change her mind? He had to admit even he would be inclined to wonder after Brandyâs incident a few nights ago. As he rides up to the station, the train was already there. He dismounts and races toward the platform, hoping that she was still there waiting to board.
âLaverne!â
He rushes up to her.
âLaverne please donât leave. I ..â
She looks at him.
âIâm sorry Mr. Anderson but I have made up my mind I donât think youâre ready to commit to marriage right now.â
He places his hand on her arm.
âIâm ready to commit Laverne, I really want you to stay. You canât make a judgment after only being here one day.â
âI think I saw enough.â
âBrandy? You may not believe me, but I was friendly with her as I am to everyone in town. If she read more than that in it, I cannot not help that.â
âIâm not accustomed to witnessing my fiancé and that lady arguing in the street and implying that there was something more than friendship there. Iâm sorry Mr. Anderson I must be on my way. I wish you luck in the future.â
âThere is no future without you Laverne, and I will make you see that I am ready to make a commitment and make it with you. I love you Laverne and will make you believe me .â
With that she boards the train, Jason watches her board as she finds her seat and sits as the train begins to move. Laverne never looks up as the train leaves while Jason stares at her until the train is out of sight.
